Feel What They Feel ✦ Your users are embarrassed to ask ‘stupid’ questions ✦ They feel like impostors for not already knowing the answers ✦ Your community can either shame them or have empathy for them ✦ They will take their lead from you ✦ Do the hard work of making your mistakes public ✦ Your community will support you ✦ Your users will respect you ✦ They will feel empowered to do the same @davidgsIoT

Privilege noun a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group. Photo by Lucas Sankey on Unsplash priv·i·lege /ˈpriv(ə)lij/ @davidgsIoT
My Privilege: Being able to make mistakes in public Isn’t White Male Privilege Great? @davidgsIoT
Spend Your Privilege Help PoC (and other marginalized people) reduce the burden of added labor that they spend on proving that they have the right to be there at all, before they even get to the point of doing something wrong. @davidgsIoT
Thank You! davidgs@influxdata.com @davidgsIoT
Using your own failures to build empathy and community by doing it in public.

Great advice from @davidgsIoT for those with the privilege: Live tweet your mistakes so that it's easier for others to make them.

Kudos to @davidgsIoT at #devrelcon for being vulnerable and sharing his story, and challenging us to be more open, especially for those of us who live our lives in public. It makes us, and our communities, stronger.

Creating a safe place for the "stupid" question (hint, there aren't any) as well as being able to say "I don't know" builds safe spaces and magnifies impact.

Acknowledging your mistakes in public is uber-vulnerable, and the members in our communities take this risk every day. Being public and admitting the mistake helps to eliminate the shame, but it's still awkward.

Many of us know the “it’s not pie” analogy wrt privilege. But @davidgsIoT points out in his talk that it _is_ pie in some ways. It’s his job to go home at the end of every day w/no pie bc he’s used it to help others around him who don’t share his privilege. @davidgsIoT #DevRelCon pic.twitter.com/hWb9ZzMBGj

"I get a free pie every day which I need to get rid of. Because I know there'll be another one there for me tomo that I didn't ask for. Spend your privilege," says @davidgsIoT.#DevRelCon #womenwhocode #womeninstem #womenintech @_devrel #devrel @QEIICentre pic.twitter.com/Tx9vCsjAZa

"I'm a white guy in tech. I didn't earn this privilege. It landed on me," says @davidgsIoT. "So I can make mistakes in public w/out worrying about getting fired. Not everyone can: women, PoC..."#DevRelCon #womenwhocode #womeninstem #womenintech @_devrel #devrel @QEIICentre pic.twitter.com/aO7c7nqZLe

If we’re willing to be transparent, the community will respect us & feel comfortable to make mistakes (+ask questions), which is an essential part of having an inclusive, welcoming, and therefore enticing community that folks will want to be a part of. @davidgsIoT #DevRelCon

The wordsmith in me is stoked that @davidgsIoT is opening his talk by defining words, and the DevRel professional in me is grateful for the thoughtfulness. Definitions are important! Make sure we’re all on the same page from the start. #DevRelCon pic.twitter.com/8uCWNkhJYJ
